Social media gives everyone a voice. But at the same time, it makes almost every voice meaningless. Because the more people try to raise their voices at the same time, the more noisy it gets. And you are less likely to hear any voice in particular.
Plus, since the voices that get to us are selected by an algorithm that we do not understand or control, we do not decide which voices or what type of voices reach us more easily and more often.
And when millions of people are shouting at the same time “Look at me! Look at me!”, we often don’t know where to look and who to listen to. It also gets that much harder to listen to our own voices.
That’s why it is important to take time to tune out the constant noise that comes from the outside. We need to also spend time alone, in silence. We need to stop and listen to our inner voices.
